During the photography lessons, we were told that the maximum range black-white one can 'record' without losing (too many) details is about 6 stops. This one was shot with my old Canon 350D. The Canon 40D uses 14bit conversion, so the full range will be larger than 6 stops.
As you have noticed from my previous posts, I like to play around with Lightroom's settings. Vignetting is very useful here to mask out the top left and top right. The original can be seen here.

Wow, that is an incredible conversion! Beautiful picture and great colors! I love the reflection in her eyes.

Hey. Great shot, and great post processing. Admittedly, with the wide eyes the baby looks a little scary, but I really like the skin tones you've achieved. Can you talk more about what kinds of things you did in Lightroom to achieve that semi-unsaturated metallic look?

@Justin Haaheim: First of all, thanks for you appreciation. And now, some explanation: - Use all 'Basic' sliders to adjust the black and white to get maximum spread in the histogram, enhance or reduce black and/or white parts with recovery, fill light, blacks, brightness and contrast. The Presence gives the special effect by reducing the saturation quite a lot, almost minimum, and then increasing the vibrance. - Split toning allows you to 'change' colors both in highlights and shadows. Only the highlights are touched here, giving it more an orange look - Vignetting is one of my favorites, because it enhances the focus to the center of the picture. Maximum was applied here.
Hope this helps, Jan.
what a cute look

wonderful portrait with a beautiful expression. I like the very close framing and the light. I don't understand your explaination except the fact that you seems to now what light is.

The eye is perfect. That's what drew me in. Good work. By the way, take everything they (experts, including others, and me) with a grain of salt. Van Gogh was told that he lacked any talent and his brush strokes were clumsy messing on the canvas. Push that fstop all the way until it screams.
